What to expect at Sky Wars, the U.S. Fireworks Championship

Sky Wars — the annual U.S. Invitational Fireworks Championship — is the largest pyrotechnic competition in the United States. Each year, top pyrotechnicians from across the country face off in an unforgettable 3-hour showcase of color, sound, precision, and “explosive combat.”

Sky Wars is a globally recognized event that draws thousands of spectators for a night of world-class firework displays and family-friendly fun. 

🎆 The Nation’s Largest Pyrotechnic Competition & Showcase – Sky Wars features two championship fireworks competitions — Pro-Am and Professional — each with their own rules, show lengths, and firework types, judged on artistry and execution. It doesn’t stop there: we host bonus exhibition displays, drone effects, massive fireballs, and specialty large-caliber firework shells throughout the evening.

📅 When & Where – The event takes place on the fourth Saturday in September at the Sky Wars Competition Field (1001 State Highway F, Innsbrook, MO) one hour west of St Louis. Gates open in the afternoon with the main fireworks show beginning in the evening.

🎇 What You’ll See – Expect large-scale, world-class pyromusicals – fireworks displays closely synchronized to music – to spread across our 1200-ft-wide competition field. There will be explosions, fireballs, and heart-thumping soundtracks, with some displays featuring flames, lasers, and even drones. The whole event features up to 10 elite teams putting on their best shows.

🎉 Daytime Activities – Before the show, there’s a festival atmosphere with food vendors, live music, and family-friendly areas. Arrive early (gates often open mid-afternoon) to grab a good viewing spot and enjoy the festivities.

👨‍👩‍👧 Family-Friendly & All Ages – Sky Wars is suitable for all ages, with children under 5 admitted free and plenty of activities to keep groups entertained before night falls.

🚗 Plan Ahead – Parking is free, but busy, so arriving early is recommended for ticket holders. VIP tickets (when available) offer special viewing areas, food, and drink options.
